What is Indigenous Herbalism?
Herbalism describes the interactive relationship between medicinal plants and humans. For Native Americans, this is a relationship into which they were always born. We know this from the creation myths that tell stories about plants coming to life alongside Indigenous peoples. Native Americans have always allied with plants in at least three ways: relationally, physically, and spiritually. The essence of their being is to be good stewards of the land, caring for the plants, animals, and even the stones. This reciprocal relationship lays the foundation for how Indigenous Peoples interact with plant remedies in what I like to call Indigenous Herbalism.

A Beginners Guide to Native American Herbal Medicine
As an Indigenous Herbalist with love for the earth and plant medicine, I was honored to be selected to write a guide that supports newcomers on their journey through herbalism through the lens of Native American culture.
Angela Locklear Queen, Indigenous Herbalist
As a member of the Lumbee Tribe of NC, I’ve always had a deep ancestral connection to the southeastern landscape, building a relationship with the medicinal plants that grow here. In 2018 I started an herb garden that brought deep healing to my whole being in a way that I can’t fully explain. These factors brought about the creation of Elemental Herbal Teas.
